Based on the 2003 French film Nathalie written by Anne Fontaine, Chloe is a 2009, 92-minute, erotic thriller starring Julianne Moore, Liam and Neeson and Amanda Seyfried. While Chloe starts slowly by outlining Catherine’s suspicions that her husband David is having an affair and teases the audience with a small snippet, in the way of a voice over, of Chloe’s abilities as a call girl, that outlines: “I guess I've always been pretty good with words. In my line of business. It's as important to be able to describe what I'm doing as it is to do what I'm doing. When to say what. What words to select...All I know is that if I do it just right, I can become your living, breathing, unflinching dream”. It quickly picks up pace as the full extent of Chloe’s manipulative, creative and seductive abilities are revealed. As the film develops, the audience are engrossed in a thrilling drama that leaves them wondering if David is actually having an affair, what Chloe’s motives actually are and who is actually being manipulated – Catherine, her son Michael (Max Thieriot) or the audience. Director Atom Egoyan and the cast do a great job in building tension, with overtly flirtatious undertones, that serves to build a real-sense of sexual tension that falls short of being overbearing or distracting the audience from the script. Overall, Chloe is a very clever, slightly smutty, and incredibly sassy story of sexual manipulation, obsession, and seduction that will leave audiences with either broken hearts, wanting more or completely in-love with Chloe.

Chloe is a splendid mystery thriller that will have the audience on the edge of their seats, due to the movies gripping tale of jealousy, betrayal and lies. The main cast: Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried all give incredible and visceral performances that really add to the movies twisting tale of suspense. The audience will be left questioning the motives of Chloe, as it seems at first she is happy to help Catherine in return for money but then keeps spinning a tale of seduction and lust despite Catherine admitting to making a mistake using her to tempt her husband. Further to this, what amazed me was what effect this had on the Reviewers throughout this film, with us questioning between us whether the tale Chloe was telling was the truth or just another series of lies designed to keep Catherine hooked.

What to say about Chloe...wow is the single word that comes to mind. Chloe is a thriller that seemed, on paper, destined to be a flop but in reality it is a heart racing, sassy erotic thriller that leaves the audience on the edge of their seats feeling slightly uncomfortable, due to the sexual tension between the cast, and equally wanting more, due to the enthralling nature of the script. Overall, Chloe is not a thriller in the traditional sense but it easily uses manipulation and sexual tension as a catalyst to keep the audience hooked through its many twists and turns. It blends drama, tension, and sexual seduction together to create a well-rounded film that effortlessly pleases the audience from the opening scenes to the ending credits.
