Reviewers | Nightcrawler

Sex Tape is a comedic film with a slightly smutty premise. Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) are a married couple who ten years, and two children later, find their relationship at a standstill. In order to rekindle their romance Jay and Annie decide to make a sex tape of themselves undertaking every position from the Joy of Sex book, but when the video is accidently uploaded to the cloud they must work together to find and delete every copy before their friends, family and neighbours watch it.

Review

Sex Tape sees Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel team up as a married couple whose sex tape gets accidentally uploaded to the cloud for all their friends, family, and neighbours to watch. While this sounds like a fun premise and the film could have wowed the audience with its smutty undertones, cringe-worthy comedic acting and references to positions in the Joy of Sex, a sex manual created by British author Alex Comfort in 1972, it fails to deliver. While it starts rather quickly with an upbeat and, certainly, touchy-feely start, the film quickly fizzles out around the 20-minute mark – so much so the audience is left wondering if Jason Segel and or Cameron Diaz suffered a premature ejaculation. As the film attempts to recover, the audience is treated to poor jokes, bad acting and an equally bizarre and unfulfilling script that leaves them wishing it was over. Overall, the Sex Tape is an unfunny, uninteresting, and unenjoyable film that will leave the audience thoroughly unsatisfied. Instead of being a slightly naughty comedy, it is a sticky mess of back and forth dialogue that is occasionally propped up one or two genuinely funny moments. It lacks all the basic prerequisites for a movie – chemistry, a good script and good actors. As such, the Reviewers would recommend avoiding it, unless you want ideas on how to destroy your marriage or acting credentials.

Comments:

After sitting through the Sextape’s 91-minute runtime, I am dismayed to say I cannot recall one funny scene, or for that matter one scene, in the entire film that I even remotely enjoyed. This could be due to the films unengaging and unentertaining premise, the long ill thought out scenes that made me wish for the film to end already or due to the adherent, and frankly amateur, acting displayed by Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. If you are looking for a good comedy film to sit back and enjoy I would suggest looking elsewhere, as this film holds as much entertainment and comedic value as drying paint.

While I share the views of my fellow Reviewer, I will not go as far as saying the Sex Tape is worse than watching paint dry – which is not saying Sex Tape is a good film – it is a seriously bad film, but is not the worst film I have seen. The Sex Tape had a good, if not slightly naughty, premise that had me wondering whether I would blush watching it or need to take a long cold shower afterward. However, very quickly I realised it was like most sexual encounters between married couples – a lot of talk and very little action. It has a slow script, poorly timed and ill advised jokes and equally two actors who are about as convincing as other countless celebrities who have had leaked sex tapes (not very convincing and clearly in it for the money). Overall, the Sex Tape is a flaccid comedy that even a little blue pill could not revive.
