8 Mile is 2002 biographical film with a difference - set to a hip-hop, fast-paced script that is accompanied by quick flowing lyrics, a struggle to make it in a poor lower class decaying neighbourhood and a abrupt love story, it is a masterpiece of modern musical cinematography. Eminem’s portrayal of Jimmy ‘B-Rabbit’ Smith Jr, who is struggling to get a record deal and breakaway from the mean streets of inner city Detroit, is as smooth as the lyrics he puts down in the battle-rap scenes. While the backdrop of Detroit and reference to 3-1-3 (its area code) pay homage to the city that gave birth to Eminem and helps ground the film in reality. Overall, despite only being 106-minutes long, 8 Mile takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, music and character interactions that ends with a rap battle that acts as a flashback to the entire film and helps wrap up the story in an uplifting manner. 8 Mile teaches the audience a lot and leaves them with a clear belief that no matter what is thrown at you if you work hard, you can succeed. It is a film that is not easily forgotten - it will leave a smile on your face, leave your head full of rap lyrics and leave you ready to tackle the most difficult challenges.

8 Mile's tagline - 'If you only get one shot, one opportunity; would you capture it or just let it slip' - perfectly encapsulates the mood of the film. The audience is treated to some great character development, acting, and some spectacular rapping scenes. While 8 Mile is not known for action, the audience will keep returning to it due to its catchy soundtrack, enticing storyline and rap battles.

8 Mile is a film that could have easily fallen down like toy soldiers. However, instead, it is a good film that blends drama with a hip-hop beat to turn the audiences palms sweaty, make their knees weak and their arms heavy, which allows them to lose themselves in the moment. When watching this film it was clear that Eminem and the crew understood that they only one shot to impress and they delivered. 8 Mile is fresh, interesting, engaging and detailed, it will inspire audiences of all ages, all backgrounds, and all abilities. Overall, It is worth watching – even if you’re not a fan of hip-hop.
