The Theory of Everything is the real-life, earth-shattering story of how 21-year-old Stephen Hawking, who has just been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and been told he has but only two years to live, embarks on his most ambitious piece of work to study the very thing he has precious little of....time.

Review
Based on the memoir 'Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen' written by Jane Hawking, The Theory of Everything is a 2014, 118-minute, British biographical film with a differences. It effortlessly combines a romantic sub-plot with the story of one man’s struggle to, quite literally, discover the theory of everything. Stephen Hawking’s, the renowned theoretical physicist, is portrayed with energy, enthusiasm and with a subtle degree of awkwardness / insecurity by Eddie Redmayne. While, Felicity Jones captures the raw emotion, difficult relationship and human aspect of Jane Hawking – who has to care for, support and comfort Stephen after he is diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. Both actors put on a truly visceral and astonishing performance that draws the audience in and takes them on a rollercoaster of emotions that highlights their complicated, and duly moving, relationship over the years. Overall, The Theory of Everything has great acting, great lighting, a great accompany soundtrack and was wrote brilliantly by Anthony McCarten and directed with equal zeal by James Marsh. The Theory of Everything is truly a heartbreaking masterpiece of perfection that has redefined the biographical genre, made physics seem cool and engaging and has set a new benchmark for British film. The cast and crew should be proud of this film.

Where to start? The Theory of Everything is an outstanding depiction of the life of renowned Physicist Dr Stephen Hawking that almost had me in tears in parts due to its powerful and quite emotional scenes. After watching this, it is my wholehearted opinion that both Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones should be nominated for an Oscar award due to their breathtaking acting throughout this film. In addition, if I could take two things to learn from this film it would be that ‘there is no boundary to human endeavour’ and that ‘as long as there is life there is hope’. A beautiful masterpiece that I will not forget in a while.

The Theory of Everything, like Stephen Hawking’s book 'A Brief History of Time', starts with theory of cosmetology before engulfing the audience in a truly human story of time, physics, and humanities endless endeavour to understand the miracle that is the universe. Stephen Hawking’s redefined the physics world and Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of him redefines the biographical genre of film. The Theory of Everything is a biographical film that pulls on every emotional heartstring, plays on humanities desire to discover the purpose of the cosmos and illuminates both the challenges of being one of the world’s most notorious physics and living with Motor Neuron Disease. This film is definitely one to watch - it is engaging, energetic and electrifying in equal measures. This film will stay with the audience long after the credits have rolled and equally will be one they will want to watch time and time again.
