Pitch Perfect is a musical comedy that unfolds at Barden University, where Beca – a freshman – joins the all female A Cappella group Barden Bella’s and tries to inject some much needed energy into the group’s repertoire. As the Bella’s get ready to take on their rivals, the Treblemakers, at the National Championship, Beca finds herself falling in love with a Treblemaker.

Review

Based extremely loosely on Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory by Mickey Rapkin, Pitch Perfect is a 2012, 107-minute, film that will engulf the audience and cause them to sing along to the films various catchy songs. While Pitch Perfect had little promotion it has gone on to amass a fortune in cinemas across the world because its characters are unique, fresh, and interesting; the storyline makes sense (although it is formulaic in places) and the love interest sub-plot showcases the awkwardness of two people from two rival groups falling for each other. Overall, Pitch Perfect is just Aca-perfect, despite the film potentially alienating some audiences through cheap or offensive gags – it is ebullient and energetic A Cappella scenes, amusing commentary, and great acting from Skylar Astin, Anna Kendrick, and Rebel Wilson makes this film enjoyable to watch.

Comments:

With some hilarious jokes, witty one-liners and awesome music, Pitch Perfect is an enticing and thrilling comedy that exceeded all my expectations. Further to this, all the characters seemed well developed, and had you guessing what was going to happen next between Beca (Anna Kendrick) and Jesse (Skylar Astin). The only slight issues that I had with the film, and the only reason why it did not receive a perfect score from this Reviewer was because a few comments made throughout the film could come across as rather racist and insensitive, such as, the deaf Jew’s DJ association, or the ‘white girl is back’ said by Becca’s roommate Kimmy Jin. In addition, the projectile vomiting displayed twice during the film made me wonder whether or not the producers thought it was funny - as to me it was unneeded and ruined a perfectly good film.

Comments:

Pitch Perfect is a musical comedy with a difference; it has interesting characters, a believable love interest sub-plot, a good song choice, and witty scenes that leave the audience laughing rather than cringing with embarrassment. Yes, in places, the film goes too far to get a laugh but overall the film delivers on its aim of being a fun filled comedic musical.
