Reviewers | Insurgent

The Host tells the story of how an unseen enemy known as ‘Souls’ threaten humanity by taking over their victims minds and erasing their memories. When Melanie Stryder is infected by a ‘Soul’ called ‘Wanderer’, she refuses to have her consciousness erased and engages in an internal battle for survival that will have ramifications for all of humanity.

Review

Adapted from the Stephanie Meyer book of the same name, The Host is an 2013, 120-minute, romantic sci-fi adventure that quickly descends into the realm of lunacy. The film just like the ‘O’ in The Host seems to go around in circles and lasts far longer than it was ever intended. While the film was a responsible for a unique game of ‘musical directors’ as Andrew Niccol was originally directing the film but was replaced by Susanna White who was subsequently replaced by Andrew Niccol, the films unintentional funniness does not end there. The actors come across as stale, and poor imitations of other well-known Stephanie Meyer teen romance characters (I think you know the ones we are on about), the plotline is frustratingly confusing, shockingly inconsistent and seriously under-developed. Additionally, the ending is predictable, the enemy contradict themselves and the internal struggle for control, while working in a book form, fails to materialise on the big-screen. Overall, The Host is a film that will be easily forgotten by the viewers, it has some fundamental flaws and could have easily been better if the script and tension was wretched up more.

Comments:

After initially seeing the trailer to The Host I had high hopes, especially as it was created by bestselling author Stephanie Meyer. However, after watching the film I was severely underwhelmed and left wanting – with an unoriginal story, run of the mill characters, enough plot holes to rival Swiss cheese and the films agonising slowness, you will be wishing someone could wipe it from your memory.

Comments:

The Host is not the worst film I have ever seen but it is in my top 10 list of films I never want to see again. The plotline was ambitious and could have been entertaining. However, instead it was slow, the characters had about as much emotion as a slab of pork (or tofu for vegetarians), the love triangle was not new and ended in a predictable fashion and the film, overall, came across as a poor book to film adaptation that has some fundamental problems.
