The Heat is a 2013 action comedy that sees uptight FBI Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock), who is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence and extreme arrogance, team up with Boston Detective Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), who relies on more on her 'gut instincts' to apprehend criminals, in order to catch to a ruthless drug lord.

Review

The Heat is a 112-minute comedic film that takes the concept of ‘good cop, bad cop’ and modifies it by changing it to ‘good cop, mad cop’. The film, while funny in parts, does not offer anything new on the comedic front - Its action scenes are limited, its characters feel underdeveloped and the audience are left wondering how Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) has not been fired for her bully attitude, disregard for rules and clear lack of criminal procedures. However, despite the films predictability, and the previously mentioned issues, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy really work well together on screen and deliver witty one liners with true comedic timing. Overall, The Heat should not be taken too seriously. Although, some audiences might question how far the film goes at times in order to achieve cheap laughs.

Comments:

While the film has an entertaining and enjoyable story, it is most note-worthy for its use of witty one-liners. While a few people may find some of the jokes in poor taste, certain jokes will stay with you even after the credits have rolled - such as the ‘tongue in cheek’ or ‘you feeling alright, you look a little pale’ quips.

Comments:

I was not expecting much from this film....I, initially, saw it as a film that you would put on during a quiet Sunday afternoon just to pass the time. However, this film surprised me - while it was predictable, certain jokes weren't funny and at times parts of the movie felt like bad 'rip-offs' of more notable comedies - certain parts were genuinely funny and enjoyable. As such, overall, I think The Heat offers a clever twist on the old ‘good cop, bad cop’ story but does not offer anything substantially new.
