Reviewers | Hitman

Hitman focuses on a genetically engineered assassin, known only as Agent 47, ensnared in a political conspiracy, which culminates in both international intrigue and violent retribution, as 47 tries to stay one-step ahead of the Russian FSB and Interpol.

Review

Hitman is the long awaited game to film adaption of the critically acclaimed and successful game franchise of the same name. It is a 100 minute, 2007, crime-action film that throws the audience into the world of Agent 47, a ruthless assassin engineered from birth to kill. Director Xavier Gen’s use of Russia as a backdrop, along with his careful choice of Timothy Olyphant as the iconic Agent 47 works perfectly to give this film a neo-noir feel. As Agent 47 kills his way across Russia and Europe, fans of Hitman are rewarded with frequent nods to their beloved game franchise; while the rest of the audience finds out that being an engineered, emotionless killer is more complicated than it first appears. While Hitman captures the essence of the game franchise and is a delight to watch, at times Timothy Olyphant does not seem to be trying - which could be because he only did the film to pay for his new house following the sudden cancellation of Deadwood.

Comments:

A great game to film adaptation by Xavier Gens (Director), that encapsulates the essence of Hitman, a franchise which I have come to love playing. Timothy Olyphant's wonderful acting and portrayal of the iconic Hitman really blew me away, as well as, the exhilarating action sequences, immersive storyline and frequent nods to the video game franchise. A true delight to watch that does not disappoint.

Comments:

Game to film adaptions rarely work; However Hitman does. The storyline and clever references to the video game franchise, such as, Hitman being played by some children in a hotel room, serve as an acknowledgement to the fans of the franchise. While the re-introduction of Agent 47, and slight back-story revelations, help bring in a new audience, who may not be familiar with the franchise. Overall, despite this film capturing the essence of Hitman, at times it felt that the FSB were not as clever, deceptive, or Machiavellian as their real-life counter-parts surely would be and that Olyphant was merely coasting through the film.
