Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 127 minute thriller that at times, just like MI6 did for the Budapest Agent, lets the audience down. Gary Oldman and Benedict Cumberbatch put on strong performances but are easily let down by their supporting cast, aptly codenamed Tinker, Tailor and Soldier. Overall, while this film was a tense mystery it did suffer from some major flaws, such as, scenes that did not really add to the movie (the Christmas party / Lenin-Claus scene), certain actors lacking chemistry and a lack of suitable reasoning why the suspects would betray their country in the first place.

This films inconsistent and often ill-thought subplots made me waiting in anticipation for the credits, coupled with the lacklustre and sometimes amateur acting from well know stars, such as, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth made me think that this film would be better titled Tinker Tailor Soldier Toilet.

While this film started off, just like the Cold War itself, in the dark and waiting for something interesting to happen it quickly developed into a well thought out thriller. The book upon which this film is based should have been read by the Cambridge Five because it showed how the murky world of espionage, if correctly deployed, could leave you guessing who betrayed Queen and Country until the very end.
